FEMTOWELD - Glass welding and cutting

Development of a technological solution for glass welding and cutting based on the use of high average power femtosecond laser.

(2014 - 2017)

About the project:

FEMTOWELD is a collaborative project between CELIA research laboratory, Amplitude Systèmes and ALPhANOV technology center. The project’s mission is to develop a technological solution for glass welding and cutting based on the use of femtosecond laser pulse (100 to 300 fs) and high average power (up to 100 W).

ALPhANOV's role:

ALPhANOV aims to produce high-quality cut-by-filamentation at cutting speeds of a few hundreds of mm/s, with chipping at the exit-face of less than 5 µm.

The welding must have a mechanical strength of 90% compared to the raw material with minimum welding speed of 50 mm/s.

Welding and cutting will be performed on several types of glass: soda-lime glass (applications in construction, architecture, flat panel display production and consumer electronics), borosilicate glass (applications in optics and photonics) and sapphire (applications in opto-electronics and watchmaking).
